The winner

The Cup takes place in Freemantle on the west coast of Australia. The wind, called the Freemantle Doctor, freshens every afternoon and promises tough races, causing damage to all the boats. The challenger is skippered by Dennis Conner, who wants revenge and brings home the Cup he lost to the USA. Stars & Stripes makes short work of the Australian, trailing 4-0 and still holding a lead of over a minute at the finish.

the looser

Kookaburra III, skippered by Ian Murray, easily outclassed Australia III in the qualifiers but was crushed by the American boat. The cup went back to the United States.
