The winner
Intrepid has been extensively modified by Britton Chance. The hull has been bulked up aft. It's on par with Gretel, but its tactics are better.
the looser
It was also Baron Bich's first attempt to reach France. But he was quickly eliminated by Gretel. He changed skippers several times and even tried to take the helm himself. Gretel II was highly innovative: two wheel helms and folding spreaders to better trim the genoa. He saved his honor by winning a superb race by nearly a minute.
